A Low Key Valentine's

We did our big Valentine's celebration on Friday.

Matt took his life insurance medical exam that morning, so had worked up quite the appetite from a night of fasting. I, a breastfeeding woman, am always hungry. So we had a lunch date! And we invited KK along too - since his daycare is right along the way. We feasted at Mt. Everest and got the weekend off to a great start!

We finished up the work day. And then did our usual daycare pick ups. Matt gets Sage from his daycare. And I am responsible for Kale. Right now the boys are at two different daycares. Eventually we will merge them together. But Sage's school only allows walkers.

Sage loves his school. Gym time is his favorite!

Friday night we did a movie night together. Our first one! We rented Disney's Planes movie. Sage liked it a lot. But was totally confused and frustrated when it wasn't around to watch again the next day. We have since made a promise to buy it for him.

Saturday morning I awoke to two beautiful home-made cards for me. One was from the hubby. The other from the boys. Read closely....

He's lucky I have a sense of humor!

Sage and I did a little artwork later in the day on Saturday.

And we built a fort. Which is almost a weekly occurrence for us.

I also did a little shopping. I had a 30% off Kohls coupon. So I ran out and spent nearly $100 on underwear and socks. Yes - just underwear and socks. Oh, plus one outfit for each of the boys. Daddy stayed home with the kiddos while I ran the errand. He captured some sweet moments on his phone camera, and texted them to me while I was away.

So cute we had to do it in black and white too!

Kale is really grabby these days. His hand eye coordination has reached a new level. He in the "grab and pull to mouth" phase. Time to start baby proofing again!

On Sunday, I had a cooking victory. A couple recipes earlier in the week had really bombed. I made an indian spinach paneer dish that was just too...well...spinachy. Too "grassy" for me. I won't make again. And then we tried thin crust homemade pizza. But I messed the dough up some how and it was bone dry and nearly impossible to roll out. So frustrating.

I decided I wanted to take a week-long cooking hiatus. Cooking is so exhausting. But...I already had purchased the ingredients for a gnocchi dish. So reluctantly I made the dish Sunday for lunch. It was a sweet potato, sage, and kale potato gnocchi. The whole time I was cooking I thought to myself, "This is health food. This is going to suck." But I pushed on...

I cooked with butternut squash for the first time in my life. And doubted the rock hard vegetable would soften during cooking.

But the final product...was incredible! One of my top 5 favorite dishes EVER. Matt and Sage both adored it as well. Ironic how it all worked out. I doubted it every step of the way, but the dish was superb.

After all the cooking I've been doing for the past year, I think my top six are as follows. In no particular order.

1) Masala paneer (the first indian dish I ever made)
2) Tomato zucchini creamy rosa pasta
3) Squash and kale gnocchi
4) Thin-crust pizza with balsamic reduction and roasted garlic (when I make the dough properly)
5) Zucchini grinders
6) Cold tortellini salad with tomatoes and asparagus

I ended the weekend with a concert. A gal pal and I went into Old Town for a Ragbird show. Didn't get home till nearly 1am! I'm still trying to recuperate from that. It was my first night away from Kale ever. I was a bit nervous. But Matt was successful in getting the boys to sleep all by himself. Good job Dad!

Kale is over the 5 month mark... and on his way to half a year!
So who does Kale look like?
I've heard it all...
So you be the judge.
Does Kale look more like big brother Sage, his momma, or is he his own unique self?

Me above.

And here's Sage below, in the following three pictures...

I'm starting to think Kale and Sage look nothing alike! And the head shape is the most startling difference. Sage had a very round head. Kale has much more of an oval shape. And Kale's ears are much more prominent. But who really cares. Both boys are just as cute as can be!

My CSU blog work has continued. Each and every week. I really should post these here more often. It's been about two months since I last uploaded any links. So once again - a big reading list below for anyone who is interested.
