An Evening With a Green Bean

Our weekend started out rather normal. A nude boy, and a pear.

I think it's quite obvious that Sage doesn't like to wear clothes. Matt read online that this is really common among toddlers. I'm not concerned in the least. He just truly hates clothing right now. He'll wear it to school without a fight. But upon walking through the door after our arrival back home, he strips down to his undies (or less) within the first 5 minutes. And on the weekends, he knows an outfit is optional, unless he wants to go outside. Then at a minimum, he needs a pair of shorts. And even sometimes I allow less - if we are in the backyard. I have too many battles with this kid on daily basis. I don't need clothing to be one of them. Choose your battles wisely!

On Saturday night we had a little family play date with my friend Katie. She lives in the neighborhood. So we walked to her house.

Eli is just two days younger than Kale. And this was the first time the boys had seen each other since they learned their new sitting skills. And Sage was a great babysitter!

Kale continues to refuse all baby food. But Katie had some good ideas for me. She's been letting Eli chew on apple slices. Without teeth, it's impossible for them to bite off anything of significant size. It's more like a flavored teething toy. She offered one to Kale. And he liked it!

Sage opted for a cupcake instead.

Sunday morning, Matt ran out to a plant nursery to purchase some planters for the front of our house. We've been needing to amp up our curb appeal. And at 50% off, it was time to finally buy. (Picture of the new front porch is below.)

I had the boys to myself while he was out. And we had fun exploring all the odds and ends of the master bedroom.

Sage is so chaotic and messy at times, and at other times so calculated. He loves to sort, and organize, and line things up. Particularly his cars.

Sage and Kale play the cutest games of peek-a-boo. Kale laughs so hard. I caught a bit of this round on camera. Sage goes to great efforts to get laughs out of his little brother.

Then it was time for a round of bed-jumping...

I love that stinker so much!

Kale watched the mattress tumbling from afar with much concern....

But was quickly convinced that Sage is a trained professional in the art of bedroom gymnastics.
Might as well sit back and enjoy the show!

One our family's worst habits is eating dinner in front of the TV. It's embarrassing to admit how much we do it. But after a long day at work, it's so relaxing to veg out to a good movie or light-hearted  comedy. But Sage gets so engrossed in the show, that we actually end up feeding him bites of food - like a baby. We spoon feed him. He is perfectly capable of using his own utensils. I just need to cut out the distractions. This past week we ate the majority of our dinners at the actual dinner table with an actual table cloth. This is our new routine going forward.

This first night at the table...also marked Kale's first experience with a green bean.

He gnawed and gnawed on them. He loved them!

So it really is the mushy baby food which disgusts him. He wants something with more of a bite to it. Real food. Table food.

Not sure how many of the 5 or so green beans actually made their way into his belly. But he sure did have a good time!

We've had some other improvements on the homefront.

First...an upgrade to Sage's toothbrush. For a long time the evening tooth-brushing ritual was brutal. Often times I would have to sit on top of Sage to gain access to his teeth. But since getting him this battery-powered spinbrush, brushing has been as close to a joy as I think this chore can get. For three nights in a row Sage would thank me - over and over - in a very sincere voice - for his gift. He thought this toothbrush was pretty darn exciting! "Thank you mommy, thank you!" he would say.

But a week and a half later....it has lost some of its luster and the brushing is becoming a battle again.

We added some decor to our front porch. Obviously...we still need to add plants. But getting the pots there is a victory of its own. Five years in this house... and we finally did some front-step decorating!

We also have gotten into a good rhythm with all of Luna's medical needs. I was overwhelmed when the doctor first explained the procedure to me. But in practice, it's not that bad. Plus, she has really perked up and that is good to see.

Her weekly routine includes 1 vitamin B shot, 7 doses of antibiotic, 14 insulin shots, and a couple rounds of glucose testing done via the litter box. And what's really fun about the glucose testing is that I get to dig around in the litter, breaking open each clump, to search for any testing strips that have changed color. Sort of like treasure hunting...but without any treasure.
