On Friday afternoon, after a week of non-stop rain, I got a sweet surprise. I got a 3-day weekend!
All week long it was cold, dark, and wet. Many parts of the state were flooding. Dams broke, mountain roads washed away, and rivers hit historic levels. So on Friday...the University closed down due to dangerous driving conditions. My part of town was completely fine. We are not in a flood zone. Thankfully, our house suffered no damage and the roads were fully drivable. But other parts of Northern Colorado were severely distressed. And so the University shut down all operations.
While very concerned for all my fellow Coloradoans, I couldn't help but get excited about this. Might as well make the most out of it! Yahoo for a 3-day weekend! Sage and I were in the car on the way to daycare when I was notified. We turned that car around and headed home!
The extra day gave me some time to cook. The autumn weather has put me in the baking mood. I made quite a few dishes this past weekend. Pictured above are pumpkin pancakes. The boys gave them two thumbs up!
On Saturday, Matt and I headed out to do some clothes shopping. In the same complex as all the stores, is a children's playplace called Jumpin. A huge room is filled with inflatable jumping, climbing, and sliding equipment. For $5, the three of us were allowed all-day play. We definitely did not stay all day, but we did spend a good hour and a half there. Sage was the youngest client, but he was thrilled to run and jump around with the bigger kids.
The inflatable slide was the BEST! Sage giggled every time we took him down. This thing is steeper and faster than it looks!
It's very smart to put a kid's playplace in this location. Sage has a short fuse for shopping. He can handle 2-3 stores before completely melting down. Having access to these bounce houses is the perfect solution. After letting him run around with no limitations, Sage had the stamina for a couple more shops before we all returned home.
On Saturday night, we learned that our friends Andy and Lainey would need a place to stay for several days. They had been renting a home right along the Big Thompson River. Their house did not survive the flood. Matt and I suggested they stay with us as they begin cleaning up the mess and looking for a new place to call home. They arrived Sunday morning.
Sage is so happy to have a live-in playmate. He has been having so much fun! Sage pays very little attention to me these days. He and Sam are too busy doing cool boy things. Climbing up stairs, throwing toys down stairs, eating food off the floor, banging on drums, and splashing around at the water table. They are so dang cute together!
Over this past week, Sage has done a lot of growing up. His
toddler-ness is really coming out. Here's a couple new behaviors:
1)He is now drinking water from a sippy cup in normal human amounts. He's actually quite a thirsty kid! He points to his cup to indicate he wants a sip. And we hand it to him to self-hydrate.
2) He now climbs...on everything! He climbs onto the TV stand. He climbs onto chairs. He's quite a daredevil. I think I might have a wildchild on my hands. I'm a bit nervous what the next year has in store for me.
3) He also now "walks" down the stairs. He doesn't crawl on his belly. He can only manage this new technique if he is holding onto the railing. But still! I was impressed! Very carefully, one stair at a time, he does it.
4) He has begun throwing classic "tantrums." They don't last long. But they sure are dramatic. I like to call his style "melting." His whole body melts to the ground, and if you try to pick him up, he remains purposefully limp.
And one final note... I have been notified that I will be posting a CSU blog entry every week! I'm excited to be sharing my story with the world at such a quick pace. There's never a dull day in the life of a mother. I've always got material!
