The Simple Things

We're kind of exhausted from all the summer adventures. We packed the last three months full of activity. And now we are tired. And the house needs a little TLC too. So the past couple of weekends we decided to lay low. We didn't plan much of anything. We focused on the basics. Just enjoying the simple things.

Such a show off! Look at him standing. He climbs and stands on everything. He can scale to the top of the second story stairs in under a minute. He likes to hang off the back sides of chairs. He uses the step stool to reach the bathroom sinks. He's wild! Can't take our eyes off him for a minute.

But no walking yet.

Guess who else makes this same face, with the upper lip so well poised?

Yes....it's big brother!

Gosh...they certainly do share some features, don't they?!?

I guess we are getting starting on Christmas early this year...

Kale's new thing is after every bath... he wrangles himself free from the towel and crawls over to the rocking chair. He likes to sit in it. But he also likes to stand in it, hanging over the back of the chair, where he will then proceed to shake the crap out of it....

I stand close by and spot him. But he's got great balance!

Yes, Kale...that IS a good face you just made!
What a cheese ball!

The real highlight of the weekend was having Sam and Alison over for some dinner and cards on Sunday. We also did some preliminary planning for our Key West trip. We made a list of must-have for our January excursion. I think the "siestas, followed by fiestas" was probably my favorite. Followed closely by "conch shell wake-up calls."

And of course the abounding tomato harvest has been quite entertaining.

Every dinner, I think to myself, "How can I incorporate tomatoes?"

Caprese sandwiches is always an easy go-to.. Loads of spinach and basil, on ciabatta. Yum! But I'm trying to push the boundaries a bit and find new ways to utilize the garden produce. Tomato tart? Tomato pasta? We'll see what I can create this holiday weekend!

I tried a couple other recipes this past week as well.

Above: double corn polenta cakes with cumin black beans.

Below: curry chicken and pancetta sandwiches.
(For the meat-eaters.)
