On Saturday, Uncle Sam and Alison surprised us with a morning visit. The little boys and I were just heading out the garage door, on our way to the park, when we heard a honk and saw a blue car pull up. What a surprise to see their smiling faces! I invited them along, and Sam even offered to pull the wagon for me.
I have no idea what we did the rest of Saturday.... This is why I take pictures! If it wasn't for the digital record of our weekends, I'd have no way to recount our activities. I can only imagine the rest of Saturday involved cleaning the house and running errands.
The focus of Sunday was celebrating Kale's one year birthday.
He was technically born at 5:11pm. But we didn't see any reason to hold off on the festivities.
We started with monkey bread.
I wish I could say I made this thing from scratch. But I didn't. I microwaved it! I found it in the freezer section of the grocery store, for no more than $7. I didn't have high hopes. Because nothing THAT good ever comes from a microwave. But it surprised us all. Gooey, warm, and tons of cinnamon drizzle.
We even discussed getting this for Christmas morning. THAT's how GOOD it was!
Then Sage saw all the presents (gift bags) lined up neatly in a row, and encouraged us to get started.
We had to remind Sage several times that it was Kale's birthday and he technically should be the one to the pull tissue paper out.
Because I knew it would be tough for a 3-year old to watch someone else get presents, I made sure to get Sage a little something.... to celebrate his own anniversary of becoming a big brother.
Later in the day I made some indulgent "jalapeno pillows."
Cheddar cheese, cream cheese, garlic powder, and jalapenos wrapped up in a Pillsbury flaky biscuit.
Later, Sage and I had a brief silly string fight. Emphasis on brief.
Note to others: don't buy silly string at the dollar store. There's a reason why it was a dollar. The can was out of goo before we even really began. :(
The big finale was a cake smash.
I wanted Kale to look festive for his smash...
But he hated having the hat on!
Sage ate just the layer of frosting off the top of the cake. I've never seen such a piece of cake so cleanly stripped before. The frosting was delicately peeled from the breading below. Leaving behind a chunk of white cake that appeared to have never been graced with a topping. Impressive!
And now I have two toddlers in my house! Two!
(Plus one giant bear - that has somehow become a permanent resident of the family room.)
And one more thing....
Poor Sage nearly knocked a tooth out of his mouth on Saturday night. He and I were wrestling around, and having a great time. But once I got tired of the game, I asked him to stop (several times). He was unable to get himself to calm down. So when I wasn't looking he jumped on me (flew at me) Super Man style. I had no arms up to catch him. Nor did he have his own arms down to catch himself.
So...his front tooth hit my knee in full force, and I heard a disgusting pop sound. He cried. I rocked him for a couple seconds then did what I knew I had to do - look in his mouth. I saw blood, and a dislodged front tooth. Panic set it. I went out to the backyard. "Hey Matt.... umm.... Sage just knocked his front tooth out!" You should have seen the look on my husband's face!
(For the record....the tooth wasn't actually out of his mouth. Just dislocated.)
I called Urgent Care, called an after-hours dentist, called my mom, and did a rapid Google search. And throughout it all, I was pacing around the room like a mad woman. "Help him! Help him!" I kept screaming to Matt. All the experts I consulted said the same thing. Don't go to the ER. Shove the tooth back into the socket and give him pain medications. I did just that. Six days later - that tooth is still in there! Just hanging ever so slightly lower than it's next-door buddy. But it's re-rooted, and strong again. I don't think it's going anywhere. And, fingers crossed, it hasn't changed color yet. And maybe it won't!
In the end, he's gonna lose the darn thing when he's 5 anyway. So not quite sure why I panicked so much. :)
