The Snow Returns

We had a lot of catching up to do this past weekend. It was our first weekend home since returning from our trip. We had taxes to submit, bills to pay, laundry to wash. So we stayed local, hunkered down, and just had some simple fun in the neighborhood.

Saturday morning, Sage and Kale explored Lego's together. My sweet colleague gave me a huge donation of Lego's that her son has outgrown. The boys have been really enjoying the new toys!

Kale is so funny... He puts everything in his mouth - except food. I don't get it! We've been struggling for over a month now to get him to eat anything except breast milk. And he won't. He gags. He seals his lips tight. He grimaces. And anything I get in his mouth..he spits right back.

But not Lego's... those apparently taste awesome.

Daddy took Sage on a little adventure to the plant store. Spring is a fun season for Matt, whose passion in life is gardening.

Later in the afternoon, after Sage's nap ended, when Kale finally went down for his (because the naps NEVER happen at the same time), I took Sage for a walk up to the complex for some frozen yogurt. It was nice for he and I have to have a little mommy-and-me date...just like it was before Kale arrived.

We took the stroller along. But these days, Sage likes to ride just half the time, and walk the other half. Such a big kid!

And before the evening ended, we did a little impromptu puppet show for Kale. Kale thinks Sage is the funniest guy on Earth. He laughs harder for Sage than anyone else. He's just fascinated with his big brother. A good game of peek-a-boo can get the biggest rolling laughter out of Kale. Matt and I sit back and watch amazed.

On Sunday, Sage and I had another mommy-and-me date. Kale was napping at this time too. We walked down to the park for some amateur rock climbing.

An an elephant ride....

Then Kale and I did a little sun-bathing. It was a hot day. Trees in bloom. Daffodils popping up all over the yard. The backyard was just screaming spring.

On Monday, Kale and I had an important errand to run. We took our oldest cat Luna in to the vet. She had been limping for over two weeks, and I wanted her injury to be properly diagnosed since it obviously wasn't healing. The doctor was suspicious something else was going on. He did some blood work. I found out the next day she has diabetes, which if left untreated, causes weakness in the limbs, and eventually death. I've spent the rest of this week aggressively researching insulin treatments. Insulin is very expensive. But I think I've finally found an affordable option. She will require two shots a day to resume a normal lifestyle.

Ironically, it was this time one year ago that we discovered Nico's kidney disease. And now Luna has fallen ill too. Matt and I sort of feel we are running a vet clinic out of our house now. Sticking cats left and right with all sorts of needles...

Then on Thursday it snowed!!!
But quickly melted.
And all day Friday it rained.

Now back to the food battle with Kale.... There might just be a little light at the end of the tunnel starting to show.

I purchased some rice wafers for Kale at Whole Foods. We've only tried them once so far. But he enjoyed it! I'm thinking maybe it's just the pureed stuff he doesn't like. He might just go straight to finger food. I've heard a lot of mamas talking about "baby-led weaning," which is a big movement in the breast feeding community. The idea is that you don't water-stuff down and puree it for your kids. You give them soft, but whole, versions of what an adult would eat. So rather than forcing them off the breast, we let it gradually happen as the babies become developmentally and physically ready. I have no issues with pureed food. But Kale does. So, I'm willing to try this!

We've also had some minor success with avocado. It's very soft, and I just cut it into tiny pieces for him to play with. Which ultimately results in him being covered from forehead, to ear, to elbows in mushy green stuff. Baths are a must following a good table session!
