We landed a great corner room with two full-sized hospital beds. Not all recovery rooms were this nice. Some poor dads had to sleep on cots or pull-out chairs. We really lucked out! Soon after arriving, the new daddy got to change his very first diaper. There is nothing quite like meconium - a black tarry substance that is very difficult to get off the skin. I was resting in bed trying to recover from the marathon I had just completed. It was nice to watch from a distance. I wouldn't change any diapers until the next day.
After a couple hours of sleep, Matt and I finally had the energy to admire the little miracle we had brought into the world. We both agreed - we make cute babies!! It was time to get the camera out and share the news with the world.
Grandma and Grandpa Carter celebrated the arrival of their first grandchild with a beautiful bouquet of flowers in an adorable red wagon. That same day my colleagues from the College of Business kindly recognized the birth of my son with a gorgeous flower arrangement - done in all shades of sage green. How clever!
On August 1st around 8:00pm we decided to head home from the hospital. We were ready to be back in the comfort of our own house. This was one of the most nerve wracking moments of the last 48 hours. I nearly hyperventilated in the hospital parking lot. I was scared I wouldn't be capable of keeping this fragile little creature alive. But the next morning, I was so happy to wake up in my own bed.
